Hi, friends! Today I’m going to talk about how it feels to take self portraits in a group.

This is something that I have experienced several times in my life. I’ve hosted nude gatherings in person and online, and taken self-portraits in groups for several years and to me, it’s one of my favorite things to do so I wanted to talk about why I love it so much!

So self portraits, I’ve already talked about why I love them in general, but specifically self-portraits in a group of people to me is really special because the collaboration and the communication and the energy of being in a group of people and making art together is really special. There’s something magical about meeting people, sometimes for the first time, and over the course of a few hours getting to know them and getting close with them, and feeling comfortable enough to like merge our bodies together to create some kind of art is just, *muah* I love it. It’s incredible.

Some of my favorite experiences have been taking self-portraits in a group of people. For instance, I did a nude gathering outside of Portland, Oregon at a nude beach in 2019. And we roamed around the beach and took a bunch of photos, and then at the end we all made a huge cuddle pile on the beach and took photos together, and that was like, amazing! And most of those people I had never met before, and I felt comfortable enough by the end of the day to be naked and cuddled up with all of them, that it was just, it was such a connecting experience and I felt so comfortable in myself and in my body and with these humans that are lovely that I just, it was yeah, it was amazing. I hope you get to experience something like this.

I’ve also done a nude gathering at my house in Charlotte, here, this is technically my backyard. In the house, because it was a pretty hot day, I think it was in August of 2019 when I did that nude gathering. That also was, we created together and by the end of the day we had a naked cuddle pile. Those are my favorite! They’re my favorite. I’m a really like physical touch, cuddly person, and the fact that you can get to know someone and get close to them and feel safe with them and it be multiple someones, and by the end of the day have a good… what’s the word I’m looking for? Like a good relationship with them enough, that you feel safe to be naked and like cuddled up with them for photos. It’s the best. I love, I love it so much and the energy of just being in a group of people creating all together is really special.

So excited. Also in 2019, we had Conscious Creativity for the first time. Me and Lior Allay hosted it and that was in Ypsilanti, Michigan. And we, again, people that we hadn’t met before creating all together and by the end of the experience, we were all together in a group taking self-portraits. And yeah, it’s just so special. I’m really excited to say that Conscious Creativity in Ypsilanti, Michigan is happening again in person this year in 2022, August 27th and 28th. If you would like to join us, the whole premise of Conscious Creativity for this year is taking self-portraits, and at the end of the experience we’ll be doing a group self-portrait.

    YAY! Conscious Creativity!

Hi friends! Welcome to another week of me making a vlog. Today I want to talk about how self-portraiture connects me to myself.

I first started taking self-portraits in…. I actually don’t know what year because it’s been a very long time. I started seriously taking self-portraits, like for specific art purposes in maybe 2010? but I was definitely taking self-portraits way before that, maybe since I was like 14 or 15, but I didn’t start taking nude ones until I was 18 and older for obvious reasons.

I learned quickly that self-portraiture helps me feel more into my body and feel more connected to my emotions and myself, and part of that is because I feel like I’m more able to release all of everything else like societal bullshit and just be myself when I’m in front of a camera and it’s just me that’s taking the photos.

It’s very different when I’m posing for someone else taking photos, because I feel more like, “oh, I need to take pictures that they will be happy with” but when it’s self portraits, I can do whatever I want because it’s me taking the photos. So it’s whatever I’m feeling and if I like them, I can share them. But if I don’t have to, and there’s no pressure of like, “oh I have this expectation from someone else”.

So because I don’t have the limitations of someone else’s ideas of what they would like in these photos, I’m able to really connect with “Okay, how am I feeling today, in this moment? And how would I like to portray that in these images?” And sometimes I just take photos, and I never share them. And it’s just so that I can get emotions out, because sometimes I feel like it’s hard for me to just, like, sit in my emotions if I don’t have something that I’m doing to allow me to move through them, if that makes sense.

I think it’s kind of hard to just be like, “Oh, I’m having feelings and this is it. Like I’m just experiencing them in my body” because I kind of tend to want to like do something else instead and push away the emotions but when I have the container of a photoshoot with myself, then I’m able to really like focus and be like, “okay, the whole purpose of this moment is for me to connect with myself and my emotions and my body, and how I’m feeling and move through those emotions in a way that allows me to express them in my body and that shows in the images”. And for me, usually the most powerful images that I’ve taken have been self-portraits where I’ve allowed myself to FEEL.

So yeah, that’s the cliff notes of how self-portraiture connects me to myself. I’m also able to kind of experiment with who I am and who I want to be, and if I want to pretend to be someone else, and express different parts of myself, because I feel like there aren’t a lot of chances for us to explore different facets of our personalities and our thoughts and desires. There’s not a lot of context for that most times, but if I’m taking self-portraits, it can be whatever I want it to be and I can be an evil villain or I can be an innocent child, or I can be totally myself or someone else. I can be anything and it doesn’t really matter because they’re photos that I’m taking for myself. So I feel way less pressure to create something specific and I can just, I can be all of those selves in one photo shoot if I want and I think that’s very special.

So I hope you are inspired to take self portraits. I would love for you to do that. I would love to see what you create! I have a Discord server, I’ll link below, but if you’d like to take self-portraits and share them with people that appreciate art and nudity and self-portraiture, you can share them on my Discord, it’s free! You can join for free. Just come on and join us! Yeah, I’d love to see what you create.

Share your self portraits! Click here to join us on Discord!

If you would like to create self portraits in a group setting, where you are off doing your own thing, but then you can come back and communicate and collaborate with others or do a group self-portrait. We will be doing Conscious Creativity, August 27th and 28th in Ypsilanti, Michigan with Lior Allay and Roarie Yum. I’m so excited! This is gonna be our first in-person workshop since the pandemic started, so that’s quite an opportunity. I would love for you to join us if you’re able. I’ll share the Eventbrite information below. It has all the details of all the information you’ll need to know. But if there’s anything that you’re wondering about and the information is not the Eventbrite, just shoot me an email or comment below and I will do my best to get back to you and give you the information that you need. • Thoughts on Creativity + Inspiration

    CAPTION FOR THE VIDEO ABOVE:

Hey friends, I don’t have any very big news or anything to tell you this week, so I just thought I would talk about creativity and inspiration. I know that the poll that I’ve put on here a couple of times, like the survey thing, a lot of you have answered, the most common answer has been in terms of what you’re interested in seeing from me is creativity and inspiration and art, photography + self-portraiture. That kind of thing, so, I just wanted to talk about what creativity means to me and how I find inspiration, if you’re interested.

So for me, creativity is something that all humans have inside of them. I also would argue that most living beings like, human and non-human can be creative. There’s a bug. I think this is a kind of ladybug, maybe like the larva or whatever… maybe, let’s see if it’ll like I don’t want to get too distracted, put it on the leaf. Okay, so I believe that humans and non-humans have the capacity to be creative.

I know, it’s probably easy for you to imagine humans being creative so my argument for non-humans being creative is… have you ever seen a spider web? Have you ever seen a plant that has grown around things that maybe it shouldn’t even be able to grow in that place at all? Have you ever seen a bird’s nest? Have you ever seen a flower? I feel like maybe creativity is our ability to, build and create things. Whether they’re useful to us, or not, whether it’s for a purpose, or just because we felt like it.

I feel like, we are all so capable of creating a number, you know, any number of wonderful things. Maybe it’s capitalism and white supremacy and colonialism and imperialism and patriarchy and all of those things that has like, infiltrated some of our minds and hearts and made us feel like we’re not creative or we’re not worthy of creating something or we don’t have time to create something or what we create isn’t good enough. And I’m here to say that that’s a lot of fucking bullshit! Like life has existed for… I don’t even fucking know how long. Thousands, ten thousands, millions of years. Like the first single-celled organisms that ever existed when there wasn’t even land here is was just like all water. Their like breath their breathing, their like, their ability to sustain themselves, like stay alive, is why there’s so much oxygen in the atmosphere right now, the reason that we are able to be alive, like It’s kind of mind-blowing.

When you really think about everything that it took for us to be here in the first place. Like a whole lot of things had to happen first, a lot, like a fuck ton, like millions of years of things had to happen in order for us to be here right now. And if that isn’t creative, then I don’t know what is. I feel like life, like the existence of life itself is creative. So if you ever feel like you’re not creative or you can’t create something or what you create isn’t good enough, please watch this video and let me tell you that you are creative.

Your work is good enough. What you create is important, whether you share it with other people or not. That part doesn’t matter. Social media makes us think that we have to share everything with everybody, but social media hasn’t been around for that long and artists have been around since…. forever. People were drawing on cave walls before we were even like living in houses. We are creative. We are alive. Therefore we are creative. So, I hope you remember that.

And I also wanted to talk about inspiration, so if that little talk isn’t enough for inspiration for you, I invite you to go outside and just sit under a tree somewhere, and listen and see what you notice… either inside of yourself or outside of yourself. Whatever is available to you. Use all of your senses. What do you see, what do you hear, what do you smell, you taste, what can you touch?

And how do those things move you? How do you feel when you experience those things? What do those things make you want to share with other people, or what do those things make you want to remember in yourself for yourself?

I feel like inspiration can be anywhere. It can be the physical world around us. It can be our emotions and the things that are inside of us. It can be an experience that we have with a friend. It can be an experience that we have with a non-human friend.

Yeah, I really feel like creativity is everywhere, so inspiration is also everywhere, and honestly, I don’t always have inspiration when I create. Sometimes it comes as I’m creating, you know what I mean? Like, sometimes it’s the act of like, getting my camera out, setting stuff up, figuring out. You know, where do I even want to point the camera? What I want to take a picture of? Do I want to be in the picture? If I do, how do I want to feel or look, or pose, or what things do I want to have around me when I’m in the picture? Sometimes, like the act of starting to create brings the inspiration to me or the inspiration maybe reveals itself to me as I’m in the process.

So you don’t necessarily have to have an inspiration before you start. I don’t think, my opinion. I’ve been doing this for over… over 11 years. Yeah, there doesn’t always have to be purpose. It can be just because you are bored and want to do something that’s not staring at a screen and like mindlessly scrolling, which is sometimes why I take photos. Maybe you just want to allow yourself to feel and sometimes the only way to do that is to be in front of a camera, and capture it… that’s definitely something that I experience. Sometimes you want to remember how you felt or how you looked for who you were with, and those are wonderful reasons to create.

Yeah, I hope if you have felt like you are not creative or like you don’t have inspiration, I hope this video helped, even though it’s very vague. But also like kind of specific at the same time. Yeah, that’s just, that’s how I feel about creativity and inspiration. I feel like they’re always around us all the time and we are able to tap into them simply by our existence, so I hope this helped you. I love you. I hope you have a wonderful day and I’ll talk to you soon.
