A couple of weeks ago I told y’all all about shooting with Kyotocat & Antisocialdisposition, now we have the film back to share with you! I’m always very excited to get the film back from a roll of double exposures, there are always surprises. I never know what I’m going to get and for me that’s part of the magic. I love seeing the images for the first time and seeing how the background works with the figure(s). Most of the time when I shoot a roll of double exposures there are weeks or even months between shooting the background images and shooting the model so by the time I photograph the model I really don’t remember what all the backgrounds are. Double exposures are serendipitous and that’s why they are my absolute favorite.

We shot 2 rolls, the first one I took of Kyotocat and the other one was a shared roll between the 3 of us. 2 of us would model and the other took the photos, so Kyotocat took the photos of AD & I and AD took the ones of Kyotocat & I. The backgrounds for both rolls are from our time in Utah this summer.

Here’s a bonus silly one of Kyotocat & me being dinosaurs (T-REX!) and not being able to keep a straight face.

This new self portrait set was taken with my friend the cow skull that my parents gave me for my birthday a few years back. Poor baby had some kind of trauma either before or after death because on one side of it’s face a good hunk of the bone is gone. That’s why the majority of the photos are only from it’s good side. =]

Kyotocat came to visit last weekend and we made all kinds of art in the short amount of time she was here. I picked her up on Thursday night and took her back to the bus station on Saturday morning. She really wasn’t here very long but I feel like we’ve been friends forever already.

I got off work early on Friday and Kyotocat, Antisocialdisposition and I went to my parent’s house so that she could take photos of me in their back yard. Afterwards we went to our friend Scott‘s studio to shoot the other half of some double exposures that AD and I started in Colorado & Utah. (Stay tuned for those images, coming soon!!! Holy cow you will love them.) I shot a roll of double exposures of her, AD shot a roll, and the three of us jointly shot a roll. You’ll know what I mean once I post the film, I’m still going through it but look for it soon.

After shooting the double exposures we played around and experimented with movement using my Instax. I took a few photos of her by herself and AD took some photos of us together. The resulting images are somewhat abstracted, moody, spooky, and interesting.  Kyotocat is open to experimenting and she has so many ideas of her own. She is fantastic at posing and is not only a wonderful model but an exceptional human being. I can’t wait to see her again and have more sleepy late night conversations.

Last weekend we went to the NC mountains with our friend Sean (aka Drake Avenue) to make lots of waterfall/nature nudes. Antisocialdisposition and I got to the campground Saturday night around 9pm (1 hour before closing and quiet hours) and set up our tent and a hammock for Sean. We tried sleeping some until Sean got there (he was shooting a wedding and couldn’t leave until about 10pm which that had him getting to camp around 1:30am) but our fellow campers next to us were drunkenly loud and playing music until the wee hours of the morning. We asked them nicely (twice) to quiet down, and the guy on the other side of us yelled across to them “it’s after quiet hours, BE QUIET, and have some respect” (something along those lines), but they continued to be drunkenly loud until probably about 2am. Grrr.

We got up at 5:30am on Sunday to shoot at a well-known waterfall before anyone else got there. We had several hours with no interruptions, people didn’t start showing up until about 10am! It was great to be able to shoot uninterrupted for that long, I was honestly expecting people to start showing up sooner than they did. The big waterfall was in The Hunger Games and has become more popular than it already was since being in the movie. Remember the scene where Katniss finds Peeta near a waterfall and he had painted his face for camouflage? That was at the bottom of the big waterfall in some of these photos! The photos we took were all around the middle section of the falls and at another waterfall in a different part of the park later in the day.

Sean brought his fancy panoramic pinhole camera to work on a new series he just started. He mentioned he wants to keep those images off the internet and have them only viewable in print or book form so follow him on social media to see when that’s available.

Photos of AD were taken by me, photos of me were taken by AD, and photos of AD & I together were taken by Sean. =]

I was fortunate enough to meet and work with Elisa Dandelion in May last year. She is super sweet and fun to hang out with and we got some beautiful photographs together. AD and I had gone to the beach with some friends a couple weeks before Elisa was in town and I had shot a couple rolls of beachy scenery to use as the background of double exposures. The black and white images are from one of those rolls! We also took some medium format color images, this first one below is one of my all time favorite photos I’ve ever taken.

(Edit: A photographer I am not going to name because after working with him I found out that he has been inappropriate with SEVERAL models and I don’t want to promote him or make others think he is safe because I have posed for him) came up from (place redacted) to explore and shoot in an abandoned college with me recently and he has been kind enough to let me share the results with you! It was SO HOT outside and was only going to get hotter so we started outside behind the college where the Department of Transportation has a bunch of junk stored. I have been to the college before but had never gone all the way back to that area. Even though it was junky there were plenty of opportunities for unique photos. Once we were finished outside we traipsed through what used to be the gym which is now covered in graffiti (well, most of the college has a bunch of graffiti), and then we went further in to the hallways upstairs and to the giant staircase in the main entrance hall. I made the mistake of laying stomach-down on the insulation-covered stairway near the end of the shoot and regretted it later after I got home. My stomach was red and raw and sooooo angry because I got tons of fiberglass all over it. That was miserable but luckily it healed pretty quickly. Now I know for next time.

At one point I had cobwebs in my pubes from laying on a retaining wall, I wish I got a photo because I thought it was hilarious.

It was super hot but I was in the shade of the woods so it wasn’t too terrible. I had to be really sneaky because there were children playing in the field next to me. Pine needles are sharp, and so are pine cones! Neither one of those feels very good when you step on it and it gets stuck in your foot. =[

I want to go back to the place with all the pine cones and spend more time there on some ideas I have. I’ll have to bring someone with me as a lookout. =]

  • How to make a stinging nettle infusion!

I’ve shared a bit on instagram about drinking nettle infusions every day and people have asked me to make a video about how to make it for themselves, so here you go!

*I am not a doctor or healthcare professional, consult with them before starting any herbal remedies.*

Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) is good for your urinary, digestive, and immune systems, and is a natural antihistamine (so it helps with allergies!). It also contains iron, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients to support your overall health.

I love nettle and I’ve been drinking it every day for several years (at least since 2016). I hope you like it too!

Places I get dried nettle leaves: Mountain Rose Herbs (based in Oregon) and Red Moon Herbs (based in North Carolina).

    ———-

Wow, time has flown and so much has happened! We left at about 6am on Saturday. We drove 1575 miles in 32 hours. Two time zones over we arrived in Denver (Sunday). Before meeting up with the friends we’re staying with we went to Red Rocks, which was beautiful of course. We hung out with our friends on Monday. Tuesday we were going to hike to Lake Isabelle but about 1000 feet up the mountain my car’s alternator decided to die. We spent the rest of the day getting that fixed. Hooray. The place we took it to was wonderful and drove us to a nearby park while we waited for them to fix it. The park ended up being a locked fenced baseball field and it started raining soon after we got there. We jumped the fence and found an unlocked door which ended up being the electrical room. We hung out in there until the rain stopped then we chilled on the bleachers the rest of the time. Once the car was fixed we drove around Boulder for a bit. Wednesday/yesterday we drove to Rocky Mountain National Park and hiked about 5 or 6 miles on Timber Lake trail. We camped overnight and today we hiked over 10 miles from Green Mountain trail to Granite Falls. Omg we are so tired and sore! That was the longest hike we’ve ever done in one day. We took a few rolls of film yesterday and today and I’m looking forward to getting them developed!

    ———-

We had to stop and get a few photos here yesterday on our way to Black Canyon of the Gunnison. We even got a couple of quick nudes on film! Black Canyon is so amazing. Photos and words cannot describe the enormity, magnificence, and wonder of this place. We took some landscapes and nudes (and the sunset!) and camped here last night. We got up early enough to shoot some sunrise nudes. I’m so anxious to see all this film!!! We just showered at a truck stop and are getting lunch before heading to Arches National Park!

    ———-

We made it to Utah yesterday and spent the night next to the Colorado River. Camping in the canyon we could see so many stars! Tonight we’ll be camping in a different section of the canyon and getting up super early (again) for more sunrise nudes. Most of the nudes are on film but we’re trying to get some digital samples to share until we get the film developed.

    ———-

We camped in the canyon again last night after our sunset hike/shoot at Dead Horse Point State Park. We’ve really been roughing it: living out of my car, sleeping in a tent, brushing our teeth at gas stations, wearing the same clothes 2 days in a row. I’ve actually really loved it even though some parts have been stressful. We don’t even know where we’re sleeping tonight yet! But that’s part of the adventure. 😊

    ———-

Hi guys! I’m currently in the back of my car attempting to get some sleep while we drive through Amarillo and northern Texas on our way back home to Charlotte. I’m sad that our epic road trip is almost over but all good things must come to an end, right? I wasn’t able to post as much as I wanted while we were gone. I didn’t think beforehand that we would be mostly in national parks and therefore wouldn’t have much signal at all. But! Now that we’re on the road 4G is on and I’m able to post stuff to pass the time! Don’t worry, I won’t totally flood your patreon feed/email. I just want to share a couple more photos of the places we’ve been since I last posted. Once we get back home I’ll start taking batches of film to get developed and I’ll be able to share so much more from the trip! I have several rolls that I used to take landscapes that are earmarked to be doubled over with self portraits or a model so Colorado & Utah will show up on here for a while. Yay!

    ———-

AD told me this bed was his new best friend. I don’t blame him, it was the first real bed we slept in in 2 weeks. Our last night we decided to splurge and stay at a bed & breakfast called Kelly Place outside of Mesa Verde National Park. One of the best decisions ever! It felt amazing to sleep in a bed and have an actual bathroom. The breakfast the next morning was delicious! This B&B is special because it’s also an archaeological site with ancient Puebloan kivas, pueblos, and other artifacts on the property. They give a booklet to all guests so they are able to do a self guided tour around the property and even encourage guests to enter the kivas! I have a video from inside one of the kivas that I’ll upload to the Smugmug once we get home. Kivas are ancient Puebloan sacred spaces that were used for religious and ceremonial purposes. They are circular underground rooms with a fire pit that you enter from above using a ladder. The thing that impressed me the most was the intricate way they stacked the logs for the roof. I don’t have a photo because it was too dark inside but wait for that video! I’ll be doing a lot of uploading this weekend after we get home.

    ———-

Got home safe and sound yesterday! Our trip by the numbers:

    32 hours driving there
    5 national parks
    2 state parks
    33 miles hiking beautiful landscapes
    15 rolls of 35mm film
    5 nights with friends
    5 nights in a tent
    3 nights in a car
    1 night in a B&B
    42 hours driving back
    5100 total miles driven

So sad that it’s over but glad to be home.

All the images below were taken on film by Antisocialdisposition during our road trip.

We’re leaving super early on Saturday morning! Probably something like 5 am. We’ll be driving for two days straight to get to our friend’s place in Denver. I’m so ready to be in the mountains exploring, hiking, creating. My wanderlust has just gotten more intense, pulling me toward unfamiliar landscapes. I am so ready to hit the road.

The only thing is… we still have to pack! I’m working until 1 pm  so I’ll only have half of the day to finish getting ready to leave. We’re also making time at some point tomorrow to visit friends, one of which is about to move all the way across the country to Portland. Now we really have no reason to NOT visit the west coast, hopefully in the next year or so. I’ve been wanting to visit that side of the country for so long, it’s about time I finally made the trip out there. I’m gonna make it happen. Wanderlust. I has it.

The above are all self portraits from a weekend in the NC mountains.

The above images are double exposures I took of Roarie Yum on medium format film.
